There are two types of disability benefits offered. You can receive a Contributory Disability Benefit or a Non-Contributory Disability Benefit.
Contributory Disability Benefit
If you meet the criteria below you may qualify for a
Contributory Disability benefit:

you are over the age of 18 and under 65.
·
you cannot work due to a physical or mental
disability.
·
the incapacity lasts for a continuous period of
more than 52 weeks.
·
you were gainfully employed immediately before
the date of incapacity for work.
·
you have made at least 150 contributions to
social insurance;
·
your yearly average number of contributions paid
or credited is over 25; and
·
you produce a certificate of inability to work
signed by a local registered medical doctor.
(The rate of your benefit will depend on your contribution record.)
If you have not paid any contributions into The Contributory Pension Fund, you may still qualify for a disability benefit.
Non-Contributory Disability benefit can be
given to those who meet the criteria below:

are a resident in Bermuda aged over 18 but under 65 years of age;

cannot work due to permanent physical or mental disability;

have been a resident in Bermuda for a continuous period of at least ten years immediately preceding the date you apply; and
-
produce a medical certificate of inability to work.
